J.B. VAN HOLLEN
ATTORNEY GENERAL

Van Hollen Appoints Janice Cummings Director of the Office of Crime Victim Services

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Janice Brazil Cummings to be the Director for the Office of Crime Victim Services (OCVS) for the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Janice will begin her duties on July 9, 2007.

Janice Cummings has served as Regional Chief for the State Department of Corrections (DOC) since 1991 and currently serves as a mayoral appointee on the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. An ordained minister, her community service work includes serving on the Restorative Justice Committee of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee; the African American Planning Committee of the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence; and the United Way “Healthy Girls” Allocation Committee.

Janice brings a wealth of professional experience, as well as life experience, to her role as DOJ’s Director of Crime Victim Services. She is a leader who has worked on the front lines of the criminal justice system, with both crime victims and with the perpetrators of crime, seeking solutions to help make our communities safer for all of our citizens. Her record of awards and mayoral and gubernatorial appointments speaks highly of her commitment and professionalism. And I know that Janice’s experience in corrections, and in Milwaukee, will bring another unique perspective to the DOJ Executive team that will help this Department recognize and respond to the criminal justice issues facing the state.

In addition to her pastoral training, Janice received her Bachelor of Science Degree and conducted postgraduate studies at UW - Milwaukee. Among her many honors, she is a recipient of the Virginia Hart Award honoring excellence in state government, the Dr. Juliette Martin Award given by the Wisconsin Correctional Association for excellence in the field of human services and the 2007 Humanitarian Award from the U.S. Postal Service for “Women Putting Their Stamp on Milwaukee.”

In addition to advising my executive team on all issues facing the Department of Justice, Janice will have the responsibility of administering a very important office within the Department. The Office of Crime Victim Services Director administers state and federal programs that assist Wisconsin victims of crime statewide, including the Crime Victim Compensation Program, the Sexual Assault Victim Services Program, and the Victim/Witness Assistance Program. The Director also oversees the administration of the Wisconsin Victim Resource Center and the Elder Advocacy program, among other duties.

Janice shares my vision of Department of Justice as a non-partisan office and my belief that positive change can be achieved by actively engaging with all Wisconsin communities. I am proud to welcome her to my team and know she will do her utmost as we work together on behalf of the victims of crime.

Without laws there is no liberty – without law enforcement there is no law. The Law Enforcement Memorial and the memorial events during law enforcement memorial week remind us of the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we could live ours. We thank them. We remember. And we honor their service.
