Within the Department of Justice, Attorneys are referred to as "Assistant Attorneys General" and are employed only within the central office in Madison. These positions perform a variety of legal services, through counsel and representation, to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporation counsel and district attorneys; provide enforcement of statutes under the Attorney General's jurisdiction; conduct legal research; draft legal documents; develop formal and informal opinions; and present/argue cases in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies. The Department of Justice employs approximately 80 Attorneys, which are assigned to one of the following units that specialize in different substantive areas of law:

*Civil Litigation
*Criminal Appeals
*Criminal Litigation, Antitrust, Consumer Protection, and Public Integrity Unit
*Environmental Protection
*Medicaid Fraud Control
*State Programs, Administration, and Revenue
*Training & Standards

The Attorney is a represented position covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Depending on the needs of the Department, recruitment may be focused either at an "experienced, journey level" or at a more basic "entry level". Candidates for any Attorney position must possess a law degree from an accredited law school and be eligible to practice law in the State of Wisconsin.

Entry level recruitment is typically directed at current law school students that are preparing to graduate, and recent law school graduates that have had limited experience in the actual practice of law (less than 5 full years). Results of "Entry level" recruitment are utilized to staff vacancies in any of the legal disciplines listed above.

Experienced level recruitment is conducted as necessary and is typically targeted at candidates that have at least five years of experience in a very specific area of legal practice. Qualifications for the different legal disciplines may vary, and are established during the initial phase of the recruitment effort.
